Despair is due not to failures but to the inability to hear deeply and personally the challenge that confronts us.

Existence without transcendence is a way of living where things become idols and idols become monsters.

A. J. Heschel, Who is Man ? p. 86

(2) Heschel on freedom

Although all men are potentially free, it is our sacred duty to safeguard all those political, social, and intellectual conditions which will enable every man to bring about the concrete actualization of freedom which is the essential prerequisite of creative achievement.

A. J. Heschel, Religion in a Free Society, in TIOF, p 15

(1) Heschel on freedom

Freedom is  the liberation from the tyranny of the self-centered ego. It comes about in moments of transcending the self as an act of spiritual ecstasy, of stepping out of the confining framework of routine reflexive concern. Freedom presupposes the capacity for sacrifice.

A.J.Heschel, Religion in a Free Society, in The Insecurity of Freedom, p 15

When the Voice of God spoke at Sinai, it did not begin by saying. ' I am the Lord your God Who created heaven and earth'. It began by saying, 'I am the Lord your God Who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage'. Judaism  is not only deliverance from external slavery, but also freedom from false fears and false glories, from fashion, from intellectual will-o'- the wisps. In our souls we are subject to causes; in our spirits we are free, beholding the uncompromising.
The most commanding idea that Judaism dares to think is that freedom, not necessity, is the source of all being. The universe was not caused, but created. Behind mind and matter, order and relations, the freedom of God obtains. The inevitable is not eternal. All compulsion is a result of choice. A tinge of that exemption from necessity is hiding in the folds of the human spirit.

A. J. Heschel, Religion in a Free Society, in The Insecurity of Freedom, p 13

(1) Heschel's major effort

Now we live in a very strange situation today. Let me again point to the difficulties. We are essentially trained in a non-Jewish world. This is where we obtain our general training. We are inclined to think in non-Jewish terms. I am not discouraging exposure to the non-Jewish world. I am merely indicating that  it is not biblical thinking. It is not rabbinic thinking. It is not Hasidic thinking. It is non-Jewish thinking. A non-Jewish philosophy is fine. But we would also like to have in our thinking a Jewish view of things. We would like to apply the Bible and Hazal, and they are often incongruent. If you take biblical passages or biblical documents or rabbinic statements and submit them to a Greek mind, they are often absurd. They make no sense. But we do want to educate Jews. We wish to maintain Judaism. What can we do about it ? May I say to you personally that this has been my major challenge, ever since I began working on my dissertation; that is: How to maintain a Jewish way of thinking ? This was my major concern and the major thesis of my dissertation Die Prophetie. Since that day I consider this to be my major effort. It is not an easy enterprise.

A. J. Heschel, Jewish Theology in MGSA, p 156

Some of us may think: how unwise of our ancestors to have committed all future generations to a covenant with God. Yet the life of a historic people is not unlike the life of an individual. As we have seen , there is no civilized living without acts of entering upon social relations, and such things imply the acceptance of a commitment, the making of a promise or the taking of a pledge. To enter a relation with God the people had to accept a commitment.
Socrates taught us that a life without thinking is not worth living. Now thinking is a noble effort, but the finest thinking may end in futility. In thinking man is left to himself; he may soar into astral space and proclaim the finest thoughts; yet what will be the echo and what its meaning for the soul ?
The Bible taught us that life without commitment is not worth living; that thinking without roots will bear flowers but no fruits. Our commitment is to God, and our roots are in the prophetic events of Israel.

A.J.Heschel, God in Search of Man, p 216
