When Rabbi Yaakov Yitzhak of Pzhysha ( the Yehudi) was young and  had board and lodging in the house of his father in law, his next door neighbor was a smith. The smith got up very early in the morning and struck  hammer on anvil until the sound roared like thunder in the ears of the sleeping youth. Yaakov Yitzhak woke up and thought: " If this man tears himself away from sleep so early for worldly work and worldy profit, shall I not be able to do the same for the service of the eternal God ?"
The following morning he rose before the smith, who, as he entered the smithy, heard the young man reading in a low tone. This irritated him: "There he is at work already, and he  doesn't need to ! I certainly won't let a fellow like that that get ahead of me !" On the following night  he got up before the Yehudi. But the young rabbi took up the challenge and won the race. In later years he used to say: " Whatever I have attained I owe first and foremost to a smith."

My existence as an event is an original, not a copy. No two human beings are alike. A major mode of being human is uniqueness. Every human being has something to say, to think, or to do which is unprecedented.

A hasid complained to the Rabbi of Lublin that he was tormented with evil desire and had become despondent over it. The rabbi said to him : "Guard yourself from despondency above all, for it is worse and more harmful than sin. When the Evil Urge wakens desire in man, he is not concerned with plunging him into sin, but with plunging him into despondency by way of his sinning."

What baffles the prophets is the disparity between the power and impact of God and the immense indifference, unyieldingness, sluggishness, and inertia of the heart. God's thunderous voice is shaking heaven and earth, and man does not hear the faintest sound. The Lord roars like a lion (Amos 3:8). His word is like fire, like a hammer which breaks the rock in pieces (Jer. 23:29), and the people go about unmoved, undisturbed, unaware. What to the prophets is like the sun piercing the thickest cloud remains unnoticed by the people.

Woe to those who call evil good,
                                      And good evil,
                                      Who put darkness for light,
                                      And light for darkness,
                                      Who put bitter for sweet,
                                      And sweet for bitter.
                                                                       Isaiah 5:20

In the eyes of the world, I repeat, I am an average man. But in my heart I am not an average man. To my heart I am of great moment. The challenge I face is how to actualize, how to concretize the quiet eminenceof my being.

Time has independent ultimate significance; it is of more majesty and more provocative of awe than even a sky studded with stars.

The power of expression is not the monopoly of man. Expression and communication are, to some degree, something of which animals are capable. What characterizes man is not only his ability to develop words and symbols, but also his being compelled to draw a distinction between the utterable and the unutterable, to be stunned by that which is but cannot be put into words.

A.J. Heschel, Man is Not Alone, Farrar, Straus & Giroux Inc. p. 4
