Man transcends space, and time transcends man.

One day a man complained to the Baal Shem about his son. He had discarded the path of piety. His conduct had become un-Jewish.
"What shall I do, Rebbe?" he asked.
"Do you love your son ?
"Of course I do."
"Then love him even more."

"Even the most impious of men is as dear to me as to me as your only son is to you." the Baal Shem Tov once said to a disciple.

Kotzk was not the first stop for Jews who longed to walk the Hasidic road. Before going to Kotzk, one had to make basic changes in oneself. The Kotzker was no kindergarten teacher. At times he would chide :

What do you come to me for ? To wash the mud off you ? To help you discipline your passions ? " From Kibroth- hattaavah the people journeyed to Hazeroth" Kibroth- hattaavah" means "the graves of  passion"; "Hazeroth" means "courts."> ( Numbers 11:35). You have to do it yourselves first. Bury your passions first. Not until then shoild you go to the rebbe's court.

A man who was afflicted with a terrible disease complained to Rabbi Israel of Rizhyn that his suffering interfered with his learning and praying. The rabbi put his hand on his shoulder and said : "How do you know, friend, what is more pleasing to God, your studying or your suffering ?"

"How can I repay unto the Lord all His bountiful dealings toward me ?" How to answer the mystery that surrounds us, the ineffable that calls on our souls ? This is, indeed, the universal theme of religion. The world is full of wonder. Who will answer ? Who will care ? Our reverence is no answer. The more deeply we revere the more clearly we realize the inadequacy of mere reverence.  Is it enough to praise, to extol that which is beyond all praise ? What is the worth of reverence ? Faint are all our songs and praises. If we could only give away all we have, all we are. The only answer to the ineffable is a mode of living compatible with the ineffable.

We cannot accept social approval as a standard for good and evil or for Jewish authenticity, for the Jewish people may be wrong, just as the individual may be wrong. A group may often act as accumulated selfishness, as the seat of demonic forces. 'Right', according to an official proclamation of the German government under Hitler, 'is what is useful to the German people.' But what is useful to the group may still  be wrong and evil. Only false prophets flatter the pride of the people. The true prophets rebelled against folkways, against that which the group preferred.

A.J. Heschel, Jewish Education, in TIOF, FS&G, p 225 This quote has appeared before on this blog. As Dror Bondi has noted in his recent compilation of Heschel writings and talks published in Hebrew, there sometimes is a discrepency between the Hebrew and the English versions of Heschel articles on the same theme. The Hebrew quote for today criticizes a tendency for socialization in terms I have not yet found in any English version of H's writings. This tendency is more prevalent in Israel , even today, than in the States which has always been more individual - orientated. Notwithstanding the revolutionary changes in global communication in our day and age, the challenges various societies face still have their unique flavors to them.

Religion becomes sinful when it begins to advocate the segregation of God, to forget that the true sanctuary has no walls. Religion has always suffered from the tendency to become an end in itself, to seclude the holy, to become parochial, self-indulgent, self-seeking; as if the task were not to ennoble human nature but to enhance the power and beauty of its institutions or to enlarge the body of doctrines. It has often done more to canonize prejudices than to wrestle for truth; to petrify the sacred than to sanctify the secular. Yet the task of religion is to be a challenge to the stabilization of values.
