בימינו רוֹוח הדימוי שחז"ל היו אנשים נאיביים, פשוטים וגלוי לב, ולא נטו להגיגים פילוסופיים. קשה להבין כיצד ניתן להכליל בצורה כה גורפת  קבוצת אנשים המהווה עולם ומלואו, שקביעותיהם הדקות והעמוקות בהלכה הציבו אתגר אינטלקטואלי בפני כל דורות התלמידים העתידיים. כל ניתוח בלתי משוחד של אמרותיהם בתחום האגדה - המעידות כאלף עדים שחייהם הפנימיים לא היו פשוטים או שלווים - יהיה בכוחו להפריך טענה זו. את מחשבתם ניתן לתפוס תפיסה הולמת רק במונחים של תחרות בין קליטה פסיבית לבין ספונטניות, בין הלכה לאגדה.

There is a general assumption that the Rabbis  were naive, simple-minded and unrelective people. How such an assumption can be generalized in regard to such a galaxy of men whose subtle and profound judgments in halacha have remained an intellectual challenge to all future students is difficult to see. It is refuted by any unbiased analysis of their agadic sayings, which clearly indicate that their inner life was neither simple nor idyllic. Their thinking can only be adequately understood in terms  of a contest between receptivity and spontaneity, between halacha and agada.

In the characterizations of man, for example, as a tool-making or thinking animal, reference is made to the functions, not to the being, of man. Is it possible that our entire civilization is built upon a misinterpretation of man ? Or that the tragedy of modern man is due to the fact that he is a being who forgot the question: Who is man ? The failure to identify himself, to know what is authentic human existence, leads him to assume a false identity, to pretend to be what he is unable to be or to fail to  accept what is at the very root of his being. Ignorance about man is not lack of knowledge but false knowledge."
