Gallantly, ceaselessly, quietly, man must fight for inner liberty. Inner liberty depends upon being exempt from domination of things as well as from domination of people.

A.J. Heschel, The Sabbath, Farrar, Straus and Young Inc. 1951. p 89

The alphabet of living is capable of forming a nearly infinite number of combinations, or situations. Yet some people have never acquired more than the spelling of one word : ditto, reducing all singularity to commonness.

A.J. Heschel, Who is Man ? Stanford U Press, p 44

...there is no such entity as man in his permanent and final form.

A.J. Heschel, Who is Man ? Stanford U Press, p 40

Beyond all agony and anxiety lies the most important ingredient of self-reflection:  the preciousness of my own existence.

A.J. Heschel, Who is Man ? Stanford U. Press, p 35

Being human is a novelty - not a mere repetition or extention of the past, but an anticipation of things to come.

A.J. Heschel, Who is Man ? Stanford U Press, p 37

The question was put to the rabbi of Rizhyn: "Of the children of Israel standing at the foot of Mount Sinai, it is written: 'And the people saw it and stirred and stood afar off...'
How shall we interpret this ? Is not the entire earth filled with the glory of God ? How can one stand 'afar off' from him ?"
He expounded: "Miracles are for those who have little faith. When Israel saw that God was performing miracles, they knew that they had still to stand afar off; their hearts stirred, and- in spirit- they stood afar off at a place which was still befitting to them, but at the same time they yearned for perfect faith with all their strength of their stirring hearts."

M. Buber, Tales of the Hasidim, Schocken Books (one vol. ed. book II) p 62

We are impressed by the towering buildings of New York City. Yet not the rock of Manhattan , nor the steel of Pittsburgh but the law that came from Sinai is their ultimate foundation. The true foundation upon which our cities stand is a handful of spiritual ideas.

Once, when the Kotzker heard that someone had died, he posed the question: "Lord of the universe, what trouble would it have been to you to let him live out his years ?" Sometimes he was tormented by serious doubts. "Yitzhak Meir," he once said to his best disciple, "if only I could be certain that there is punishment in the world to come, I would go out into the streets and dance for joy. If only I could be certain..."

Rabbi Bunam once said:
"When I look at the world, it sometimes seems to me that every man is a tree in a wilderness, and that God has no one in his world but him, and that he has no one to turn to, save only God."

New insight begins when satisfaction comes to an end, when all that has been seen, said, or done looks like a distortion.

Rabbi Menahem Mendel of Vorki was asked what constitutes a true Jew.
He said : "Three things are fitting for us : upright kneeling, silent screaming, motionless dance."

The Rabbi of Kotzk said :
"Everything in the world can be imitated except truth. For truth that is imitated is no longer truth."

The disciples of the Baal Shem heard that a ceratin man had a great reputation for learning. Some of them wanted to go to him and find out what he had to teach. The master gave them permission to go , but first they asked him: " And how shall we be able to tell whether he is a true zaddik ?"
The Baal Shem replied. "Ask him to advise you what  to do to keep unholy thoughts from disturbing you in your prayers and studies. If he gives you advise. then you will know that he belongs to those who are of no account. For this is the service of men in the world to the very hour of their death; to struggle time after time with the extraneous, and time after time to uplift and fit it into the nature of the Divine Name."

M. Buber, Tales of the Hasidim, Schocken Books ( one vol. ed. book I, ) p 66

The basic message that both Kierkegaard and the Kotzker proclaim is that  the life of faith is hard  to enter upon and maintain, difficult to understand or explain.

One of Rabbi Moshe of Kobryn's  hasidim was very poor. He complained to the zaddik that his wretched circumstances were an obstacle to learning and praying.
"In this day and age," said Rabbi Moshe, "the greatest devotion, greater than learning and praying, consists in accepting the world exactly as it happens to be."

M. Buber, Tales of the Hasidim, Schocken Books, ( one vol. ed. book II, )  p 166

Thought is a response to being rather than an invention. The world does not lie prostrate, waiting to be given order and coherence by the generosity of th human mind. Things are evocative. When conceits are silent and all words stand still, the world speaks. We must burn the cliche's  to clear the air for hearing. Conceptual cliche's are counterfeit; preconceived notions are misfits. Knowledge involves love, care for the things we seek to know, longing, being drawn to, being overwhelmed.

A.J. Heschel, Who is Man? Stanford U Press, pp 108- 109

The meaning of faith is not to believe  in an idea because it is incontestable. To believe is to contend against impediments, to defy refutation, and to accept embarrassment.

in a nutshell: lions & angels

God and the world are not opposite poles. There is darkness in the world, but there is also this call: "Let there be light !"

There are alleys in the soul where man walks alone, ways that do not lead to society, a world of privacy that shrinks from the public eye.

The sense of wonder and transcendence must not become "a cushion for the lazy intellect." It must not substitute for analysis where analysis is possible; it must not stifle doubt where doubt is legitimate. It must, however, remain a constant awareness if man is to remain  true to the dignity of God's creation, because such awareness is the spring of all creative thinking.

A.J. Heschel, God in Search of Man, FSG, p 51

When R. Shemayah the Elder lay on his death bed, his fellow Kotzk disciples asked him: "Shemayah, what about the yezer hara' ( the evil inclination) ? Does it still trouble a man even now ?"
" What a question," muttered R. Shemayah with his eyes half closed. "Don't you all see how the yezer hara'  is standing here at the head of the bed whispering in my ear : 'R. Shemayah, say "Shema' Israel" in a loud voice and draw out the word "ehad" ?"'
     R. Shemayah continued; " I recognized him, the thief - I know his intention, He is trying to seduce me to say 'Shema' Yisrael' in order that after my death you will say that R. Shemayah left this world in a pure state, on the word 'ehad"'

What is the truth of being human? The lack of pretension, the acknowledgement of opaqueness, shortsightedness, inadequacy.  But truth also demands rising, striving, for the goal is both within and beyond us. The truth of being human is gratitude; its secret appreciation.
