Time is never idle; life is running out; but the law takes us by our hand and leads us home to an order of eternity.

A.J. Heschel, God in Search of Man, 300

Much has happened to destroy our contact with the world of the prophets. Today the way to the Bible is littered with heaps of  clichés and preconceptions, and on arriving at its words the mind is blind with shallow knowing. Certainly the first prerequisite for understanding the prophets is trained sensibility to what they stand for. The way remains closed to those to whom God is less real than  'a consuming fire', to those who know the answers but no wonder. Those who look for a way to the Bible will have to unthink many thoughts and to recall the innate sense of  wonder, systematically extirpated by false wisdom.

The words of the Psalmist, Depart from evil and do good (34:15), contain the epitome of right living. Yet, it seems that Jewish tradition believes that the right way of departing from evil is to do good; it puts the accent on the second half of the sentence.

Judaism is not a science of nature but a science of what man ought to do with  nature. It is concerned above all with the problem of living. It takes deeds more seriously than things. Jewish law is, in a sense, a science of deeds. Its main concern  is not only how to worship  Him at certain times but how to live with Him  at all times. Every deed is a problem; there is a unique task at every moment. All of life at all moments is the problem and the task.

A.J. Heschel, God in Search of Man, 292

The Bible is a seed, God is the sun, but we are the soil. Every generation is expected to bring forth new understanding and new realization.

Judaism remains irrelevant unless we develop a degree of sensitivity to the ultimate questions which its ideas and actions are trying to answer. To cultivate such a sensitivity as well as a sense of horror to specious answers and the attempts to vitiate the urgency of ultimate questions is the sacred task of a Jewish Teacher.

Unless we overcome the externalization  of Judaism, all our efforts will be futile. It is impossible to observe the Seventh Day, week after week, if one's inner life remains untouched and unenriched by it. Unless there is a Sabbath in the soul, it is very difficult to remain loyal to the Sabbath laws.

A. J. Heschel. Israel and Diaspora , Insecurity, 218

We must learn to deal with the doubts , the confusions, and the distortions. Our task is not  to satisfy complacency but to shatter it. Our duty is confrontation rather than evasion.

Our future depends upon the realization that to be a Jew means not only to do certain deeds but also to stand for certain  thoughts. We must learn to discover the intellectual relevance of Judaism in terms of the moral and spiritual problems of human existence.

A. J. Heschel. Israel and Diaspora, Insecurity, 218

The eternal command, like a saw, is trying to cut the callousness of hearts. In spite all efforts the callousness remains uncut. What then , is the meaning of all endeavor ?

The idea of the Sabbath as a queen or a bride is not a personification of the Sabbath but an exemplification of a divine attribute, an illustration of God's need for human love; it does not represent a substance but the presence of God, His relationship to man.

This is the meaning of existence: To reconcile liberty with service. the passing with the lasting, to weave the threads of temporality into the fabric of eternity.

The world is a gate, not a wall.

The Biblical man does not see nature in isolation but in relation to God. 'At the beginning God created heaven and earth' - these few words set forth the contingency and absolute dependence of all of reality. What, then, is reality ? To the Western man, it is a thing in itself;  to the Biblical Man, it is a thing through God. Looking at a thing, his eyes see not so much form, color, force and motion as an act of God. The world is a gate, not a wall.

Lift up your eyes and see. How does a man lift up his eyes to see a little higher than himself ? The grand premise of religion  is that man is able to surpass himself; that man who is part of this world may enter into a relationship with Him who is greater than the world; that man may lift up his mind and be attached to the absolute; that man who is conditioned by a multiplicity of factors is capable pf living with demands that are unconditioned. How does one rise above the horizon of the mind ? How does one free himself from the perspectives of ego, group, earth and age ? How does one find a way in this world that would lead to an awareness of Him who is beyond this world ?

A. J. Heschel, God in Search of Man, 33

The meaning of the Sabbath is to celebrate time rather than space. Six days a week we live under the tyranny of things of space; on the Sabbath we try to become attuned to holiness in time. It is a day on which we are called upon to share in what is eternal in time, to turn from the results of creation to the mystery of creation; from the world of creation to the creation of the world.

A.J. Heschel, the Sabbath, 10

Religion is not made for extraordinary  occasions, such as birth, marriage and death. Religion is trying to teach us that no act is trite, every moment is an extraordinary occasion.
The highest peak of spiritual living is not necessarily reached in rare moments of ecstasy;  the highest peak lies wherever we are and may be ascended in a common deed. There can be as sublime a holiness in performing friendsip, in observing dietary laws day by day, as in uttering  a prayer on the Day of Atonement.
It is not by the rare act of greatness that character is determined, but by everyday actions, by a constant effort to rend our callousness. It is constancy that sanctifies. Judaism is an attempt to place all of life under the glory of ultimate significance, to relate all scattered actions to the One. Through the constant rhythm of prayers, disciplines, reminders, joys, man is taught not to forfeit his grandeur.

A.J.Heschel, God in Search of Man, 384

The heart is often a lonely voice in the marketplace of living. Man may entertain lofty ideals and behave like the ass that, as the saying goes, 'carries gold and eats thistles'. The problem of the soul is how to live nobly in an  animal enviorment; how to persuade and train the tongue and senses to behave in agreement with the insights of the soul.

The integrity of life is not exclusively a thing of the heart; it implies more than consciousness of the moral law. The innermost chamber must be guarded at the uttermost outposts. Religion is not the same as spiritualism; what man does in his  concrete, physical existence is directly relevant to the divine. Spirituality is the goal, not the way of man. In this world music is played on physical instruments, and to the Jew the mitsvot are the instruments on which the holy is carried out. If man were only mind, worship in thought  would be the form in which to commune with God. But man is body and soul, and his goal is so to live that both 'his heart and his flesh sing to the living God'.

Just as clairvoyants may see the future, the religious man comes to sense the present moment. And this is an extreme achievement. For the present is the presence of God. Things have a past and a future, but only God is pure presence.

What do we and the people of the Bible have in common ? The anxieties and joys of living; the sense of wonder and the resistance to it; the awareness of the hiding God and moments of longing to find a way to Him.
The central thought of Judaism is the living God. It is the perspective from which all other issues are seen.

The Biblical answer to evil is not the good but the holy. It is an attempt to raise man to a higher level of existence, where man is not alone when confronted with evil. Livining in 'the light of the face of God' bestows upon man a power of love that enables him to overcome the powers of evil. The seductiveness of  vice is excelled by the joys of the mitzvah.
