They asked Rebbe Barukh of Mezbizh: " In the hymn, God is called 'Creator of remedies, awful in praises, lord of wonders.' Why ? Why should remedies stand next to wonders and even precede     them ?" He answered: God does not want to be praised as the lord of supernatural miracles. And so  here, through the mention of remedies, Nature is introduced and put first. But the truth is that everything is a  miracle and wonder.

When all work is brought to a standstill, the candles are lit. Just as creation began with the word, " Let there be light !" so does the celebration of creation begin with the kindling of lights. It is the woman who ushers in the joy and sets up the most exquisite symbol, light, to dominate the atmosphere of the home.
And the world becomes a place of rest. An hour arrives like a guide, and raises our minds above accustomed thoughts. People assemble to welcome the wonder of the seventh day, while the Sabbath sends out its presence over the fields, into our homes, into our hearts. It is a moment of resurrection of the dormant spirit in our souls.

Man's responsibility to God is not an excursion into spirituality, an episode of spiritual rhapsody, but the scaffold on which he stands as daily he goes on building life. His every deed, every incident of mind, takes place on this stage, so that unremittingly man is at work either building up or tearing down his life, his home, his hope of God.

In the light of the Bible, the good is more than a value; it is a divine concern, a way of God. This is the profound implication of the oneness of God: all deeds are relevant to Him. He is present in all our deeds. "The Lord is good to all and His compassion is over all that He has made" (Psalms 145:10). There is no reverence for God without reverence for man. Love of man is the way to the love of God. The fear lest we hurt a poor man must be as deep as the fear of God, for He that oppresses the poor blasphemes his maker, but he who is gracious unto the needy honors Him (Proverbs 14:31).

They asked Rabbi Mikhal: "In the Sayings of the Fathers we read: 'Who is wise ?' He who learns from all men, as it is said, 'From all my teachers I have gotten understanding.' Then why does it not say: 'He who learns from every teacher'?"
Rabbi Mikhal explained: "The master who pronounced these words, is intent on having it clear that we can learn not only from those whose occupation is to teach, but from every man. Even from one one who is ignorant, or from one who is wicked, you can gain understanding as to how to conduct your life."

Trying to remain loyal to both aspects of Jewish living, we discover thta the pole of regularity is stronger than the pole of spontaneity, and as a result, there is a perpetual danger of our observance and worship becoming mere habit, a mechanical performance. The fixed pattern and regularity of our services tend to stifle the spontaneity of devotion. Our great problem, therefore, is how not to let the principle of regularity (keva) impair the power of spontaneity (kavanah). It is a problem that concerns the very heart of religious living, and is as easy to solve as other central problems of existence. It is a part of human freedom to face that challenge and to create an answer in every situation, every day of our life. Palliatives may be found, but no cure to polarity is available in this "world of separation."

Rabbi Solomon of Radomsk once arrived in a certain town, where, he was told, lived an old woman who had known the famous Rabbi Elimelech. She was too old to go out, so he went to see her and asked her to tell him what she knew about the great Master.

" I do not know what went on in his room, because I worked as one of the maids in the kitchen of his house. Only one thing I can tell you. During the week the maids would often quarrel with one another, as is common. But, week after week, on Friday when the Sabbath was about to arrive, the spirit in the kitchen was like the spirit on the eve of the Day of Atonement. Everybody would be overcome with an urge to ask forgiveness of each other. We were all siezed by a feeling of affection and inner peace."

Faith does not come out of nothing. There are antecedents of religious commitment, acts that happen within the depth of the person, moments that necessitate groping for faith: the sense of wonder and mystery, reverence and radical amazement, the sense of indebtedness and embarrassment, the fallacy of absolute expedience, the demonic nature of man's false sense of sovereignty, openess to history, concern for ultimate meaning of existence, the vital importance of inwardness, the awareness of man's ultimate accountability before God.
