One day a man complained to the Baal Shem about his son. He had discarded the path of piety. His conduct had become un-Jewish.
"What shall I do, Rebbe?" he asked.
"Do you love your son ?
"Of course I do."
"Then love him even more."

"Even the most impious of men is as dear to me as to me as your only son is to you." the Baal Shem Tov once said to a disciple.

Kotzk was not the first stop for Jews who longed to walk the Hasidic road. Before going to Kotzk, one had to make basic changes in oneself. The Kotzker was no kindergarten teacher. At times he would chide :

What do you come to me for ? To wash the mud off you ? To help you discipline your passions ? " From Kibroth- hattaavah the people journeyed to Hazeroth" Kibroth- hattaavah" means "the graves of  passion"; "Hazeroth" means "courts."> ( Numbers 11:35). You have to do it yourselves first. Bury your passions first. Not until then shoild you go to the rebbe's court.

A man who was afflicted with a terrible disease complained to Rabbi Israel of Rizhyn that his suffering interfered with his learning and praying. The rabbi put his hand on his shoulder and said : "How do you know, friend, what is more pleasing to God, your studying or your suffering ?"

"How can I repay unto the Lord all His bountiful dealings toward me ?" How to answer the mystery that surrounds us, the ineffable that calls on our souls ? This is, indeed, the universal theme of religion. The world is full of wonder. Who will answer ? Who will care ? Our reverence is no answer. The more deeply we revere the more clearly we realize the inadequacy of mere reverence.  Is it enough to praise, to extol that which is beyond all praise ? What is the worth of reverence ? Faint are all our songs and praises. If we could only give away all we have, all we are. The only answer to the ineffable is a mode of living compatible with the ineffable.

We cannot accept social approval as a standard for good and evil or for Jewish authenticity, for the Jewish people may be wrong, just as the individual may be wrong. A group may often act as accumulated selfishness, as the seat of demonic forces. 'Right', according to an official proclamation of the German government under Hitler, 'is what is useful to the German people.' But what is useful to the group may still  be wrong and evil. Only false prophets flatter the pride of the people. The true prophets rebelled against folkways, against that which the group preferred.

A.J. Heschel, Jewish Education, in TIOF, FS&G, p 225 This quote has appeared before on this blog. As Dror Bondi has noted in his recent compilation of Heschel writings and talks published in Hebrew, there sometimes is a discrepency between the Hebrew and the English versions of Heschel articles on the same theme. The Hebrew quote for today criticizes a tendency for socialization in terms I have not yet found in any English version of H's writings. This tendency is more prevalent in Israel , even today, than in the States which has always been more individual - orientated. Notwithstanding the revolutionary changes in global communication in our day and age, the challenges various societies face still have their unique flavors to them.

Religion becomes sinful when it begins to advocate the segregation of God, to forget that the true sanctuary has no walls. Religion has always suffered from the tendency to become an end in itself, to seclude the holy, to become parochial, self-indulgent, self-seeking; as if the task were not to ennoble human nature but to enhance the power and beauty of its institutions or to enlarge the body of doctrines. It has often done more to canonize prejudices than to wrestle for truth; to petrify the sacred than to sanctify the secular. Yet the task of religion is to be a challenge to the stabilization of values.

In the light of the Bible, history is not a mere succession of faits acomplis, things done and no longer worth arguing against. Though events do not run according to a predestined plan, and though the ultimate goal can never be expressed in one word or in words at all, we believe that history as a whole has a meaning that transcends that of its parts. We must remember that God is involved in our doings, that meaning is given not only in the timeless but primarily in the timely, in that task given here and now.
Great are man's possibilities.  For time is but a little lower than eternity, and history is a drama in which both man and God have a stake. In its happenings we hear the voice as well as the silence of God.

The prophets, questioning man's infatuation with might, insisted not only on the immorality but also on the futility and absurdity of war. In a later era Napoleon, we are told, solemnly declared to his Minister of Education: "Do you know, Fontanes, what astonishes me most in this world ? The inability of force to create anything. In the long run the sword is always beaten by the spirit." < J.C.Herold, The Mind of Napoleon (New York, 1955), p.76.> Yet, the most astonishing thing in the world is the perennial disregard of the impotence of force. What is the ultimate profit of all the arms, alliances and victories ? Destruction, agony, death.

Peoples labor only for fire,
Nations weary themselves for naught.

On what basis do we people of different religious commitments meet one another ?
First and foremost, we meet as human beings who have much in common: a heart, a face, a voice, the presence of a soul, fears, hope, the ability to trust, a capacity for compassion and understanding, the kinship of being human. My first task in every encounter is to comprehend  the personhood of the human being I face, to sense the kinship of being human, solidarity of being.

The words in the Scriptures: "Justice, justice shalt thou follow," were interpreted in the following way by the rabbi of Lublin:
"When a man believes that he is wholly just and need not strive further, then justice does not recognize him. You must follow and follow justice and never stand still, and in your own eyes, you must always be like a new-born child that has not yet achieved anything at all - for that is true justice."

The idea of man's self sufficiency, man's exaggerated consciousness of himself was based on a generalization; from the fact that technology could solve some problems it was deduced that technology could solve all problems. This proved to be a fallacy. Social reforms, it was thought, would cure all ills and eliminate all evils from our world. Yet we have finally discovered what prophets and saints have always known: bread and power alone will not save humanity. There is a passion and drive for cruel deeds which only the awe and fear of God can soothe; there is a suffocating selfishness in man which only holiness can ventilate.

Every single Jew has a point in them that is uniquely precious... And it is with this point that he bestows upon, enlightens, and arouses the heart of others. We all need to accept this arousal and this unique point from each other. As it says, “And they receive one from another”

To meet a human being is a major challenge to mind and heart. I must recall what I normally forget. A person is not just a specimen of the species called Homo sapiens. He is all of humanity in one, and whenever one man is hurt, we are all injured.

A.J. Heschel, "No Religion is an Island", in "Moral Grandeur and Spiritual Audacity" , FSG, p 238. Bringing the above quote without what follows directly in the text is similar to quoting "Love thy neighbor as thy self" and leaving out what follows directly in the Bible " I am the Lord."  Humanism according to Heschel is inextractably connected to piety.- to faith in God. - Jeff

The pious man is possessed by his awareness of the presence and the nearness of God. Everywhere and at all times he lives in His sight, whether he remains always heedful of His proximity or not. He feels emnraced by God's mercy as by a vast encircling space. Awareness of God is as close to him as the throbbing of his own heart, often deep and calm, but at times overwhelming, intoxicating, setting the soul afire. The momentous reality of God stands there as peace, power, and endless tranquility, as an inexhaustible source of help, as boundless compassion, as an open gate awaiting prayer.

Life must be earned spiritually, not only materially. A good conscience is the invention of the devil. Man knows more than he understands. He senses more than he is able to say. Reducing knowledge to the limits of understanding is to stulify our intelligence. To maintain that everything we know we are able to understand, that everything we sense we are able to say, is an invention of idiots. Intellectual embarrassment, awareness of our inablilty to say what we sense, is a prerequiste of intelligence.

How does one measure dominion, beauty, wealth, power ? The soul of every human being posesses within it the tendency to value those things that it likes, and to bow down to that which appears valuable. This is a test that everyone undergoes. How easy it is to be attracted by outward beauty, and how hard it is to remove the mask and penetrate to that which is inside.

A.J. Heschel, Pikuach Neshama, in MG&SA, FSG, p. 58
Editor's Note : The original article Pikuach Neshama was written in Hebrew by Heschel. In the English version which appears in Moral Grandeur and Spiritual Audacity there is a mistake which I have corrected - more or less - in the above passage, The Eng version as published : "This is a test that everyone passes."  The Heb version: "This is a test that not everyone passes." (exactly : that not everyone is privliged to pass - zoceh laavor; la avor might also be understood as : to endure) My version which is a sort of compromise: This is a test that everyone undergoes. - Jeff

He replied: "My way was shown to me by my holy teacher, may he merit life in the world to come. Concerning manna, it is written: ' And the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day.'
Every day has its own portion of prayer, and one must concentrate on the particular meaning of each portion every day."

Life is a battle for meaning which may be lost or won, totally or partially. What is at stake may be gambled away.

According to an ancient legend, the light created at the very beginning of creation was not the same as the light emitted by the sun, the moon and the stars. The light of the first day was of a sort that would have enabled man to see the world at a glance from one end to the other. Since man was unworthy to enjoy the blessing of such light, God concealed it; but in the world to come it will appear to the pious in all its pristine glory. Something of that light rests upon saints and men of righteous deeds on the seventh day, and that light is called the additional soul.
