יש שבילים בחיי הנשמה, שבהם מהלך האדם לבדו, שבילים שאינם מוליכים אל החברה, עולם הייחוד הסולד מפני עין הרבים. החיים משתרעים  לא רק על פני אדמות משקה פוריות, אלא גם על פני הרים של חלומות, מנהרות של צער, רכסי שאיפות, שקשה לנצל אותם ללא שיור לטובת החברה, אלא אם כן ייהפך האדם למכונה שכל בורג שבו חייב לשמש למטרה ידועה, או שיסלקו אותו. מדינה סוחטנית היא זו המנסה לנצל את היחיד, המבקשת לעצמה את האדם כולו.

We cannot accept social approval as a standard for good and evil or for Jewish authenticity, for the Jewish people may be wrong, just as the individual may be wrong. A group may often act as accumulated selfishness, as the seat of demonic forces. 'Right', according to an official proclamation of the German government under Hitler, 'is what is useful to the German people.' But what is useful to the group may still  be wrong and evil. Only false prophets flatter the pride of the people. The true prophets rebelled against folkways, against that which the group preferred.

A.J. Heschel, Jewish Education, in TIOF, FS&G, p 225 This quote has appeared before on this blog. As Dror Bondi has noted in his recent compilation of Heschel writings and talks published in Hebrew, there sometimes is a discrepency between the Hebrew and the English versions of Heschel articles on the same theme. The Hebrew quote for today criticizes a tendency for socialization in terms I have not yet found in any English version of H's writings. This tendency is more prevalent in Israel , even today, than in the States which has always been more individual - orientated. Notwithstanding the revolutionary changes in global communication in our day and age, the challenges various societies face still have their unique flavors to them.
