שאלו לו להרבי מרוזין: "כתוב: 'וירא העם וינועו ויעמדו מרחוק'. מה הכוונה ? הרי מלוא כל הארץ כבודו ! איך אפשר לעמוד מרחוק ?"

הסביר הרבי: "המופתים נועדים לקטני-אמונה. כשראו ישראל שהקדוש ברוך הוא בא במופתים, הבינו שעדיין עומדים הם מרחוק, ולבם נע, והעמידו עצמם במחשבתם מרחוק שעדיין ראוי להם להיות כך, אבל יחד עם זה השתוקקו בכל כוח לבם אל האמונה השלימה."

The question was put to the rabbi of Rizhyn: "Of the children of Israel standing at the foot of Mount Sinai, it is written: 'And the people saw it and stirred and stood afar off...'

How shall we interpret this ? Is not the entire earth filled with the glory of God ? How can one stand 'afar off' from him ?"

He expounded: "Miracles are for those who have little faith. When Israel saw that God was performing miracles, they knew that they had still to stand afar off; their hearts stirred, and- in spirit- they stood afar off at a place which was still befitting to them, but at the same time they yearned for perfect faith with all their strength of their stirring hearts."
