In a very deep sense, religion is two things. First of all, it's an answer to the ultimate problems of human existence. And it also has another side. It is a challenge to all answers. It is living in this polarity of these two points.

A.J. Heschel, The Carl Stern Interview, in Moral Grandeur and Spiritual Audacity, FSG, pp 402- 403

Part company with preconceived notions, suppress your leaning to reiterate and to know in advance of your seeing, try to see the world for the first time with eyes not dimmed  by memory or volition, and you will detect that you and the things that surround you - trees, birds, chairs - are like parallel lines that run close and never meet. Yor pretense of being acquainted with the world is quickly abandoned.

A.J.Heschel, Man is Not Alone, Farrar, Straus & Giroux Inc, p. 5
