Carl Stern: I brought these books from home. They're only a small portion of the books you've written. What was there in your life, especially your early life, that would give you the thoughts to fill so many books ?

Dr. Heschel: Hard work, training and a good environment. I was  very fortunate in having lived as a child and as a young boy in an environment where there were many people I could revere, people concerned with problems of inner life, of spirituality and integrity. People who have shown great compassion and understanding for other people.

פרופ' השל: עבודה קשה, הדרכה נאותה וסביבה מתאימה. שפר עלי מזלי מאוד בכך שחייתי כילד וכנער צעיר בסביבה בה היו אנשים רבים אותם יכולתי להעריץ, אנשים שעסקו בשאלות של החיים הפנימיים, של חיי הרוח, ושל הצדק והיושר. אנשים שגילו כלפי זולתם יחס חם של השתתפות והבנה.

But your life itself has not been an easy life. You escaped from Poland just before the Nazis came in. What experiences of life have found their way into these books ?

I would say again, my background, my early upbringing. I would criticise my early upbringing as deficient in one respect and very rich in another respect. Deficient in what may be called the art of relaxation, sports. I'm not the sporting type, unfortunately. But very rich in moments of exultation. This enabled me to stand a little bit above the circumstances of life and to take a perspective from which I could see the world, so to speak,, from a higher point of view. In other words, I was trained to live a life, which is compatible with the mystery and marvel of human existence.

אך חייך שלך עצמך לא היו קלים. נמלטת מפולין עם כניסת הנאצים. מה הם ניסיונות חייך אשר באו לידי ביטוי בספרים אלה ?

השל: הייתי אומר, שוב, הרקע שלי, ראשית חינוכי. הייתי מעריך את חינוכי המוקדם כלוקה מבחינה אחת ועשיר מאוד מבחינה אחרת. לקוה במה שקרוי אומנות ההרפייה, הספורט. לצערי אינני איש הספורט. אך אני עשיר מאוד ברגעי חדווה. עובדה זו איפשרה לי להתרומם מעט מעל  נסיבות החיים ולנקוט עמדה ממנה יכולתי לראות את העולם מנקודת השקפה עליונה יותר, אם יורשה לי לומר כך. במלים אחרות, חונכתי כילד לחיות, או להשתדל לחיות, חיים ההולמים את המיסתורין והפליאה של הקיום האנושי.
