The Kotzker, a soul living in dissent, was all protest against the trivialization and externalization of Judaism. Rejecting half truths, medocrity, compromise, he challenged even the Lord. Distrustful of whatever the popular eye perceived, he did not seek to make his stand plausible among men of common sense. So he remains marvelous and strange, and individuals who agonize over our world's insanity will respond to him.
A.J. Heschel, A Passion for Truth (APFT), Jewish Lights Publishing, p. 307. ( The above is the opening paragraph of the last part ( part 10) of APFT entitled "The Kotzker Today". The rest might follow in installments, in view of the craziness which has erupted in Israel, engulfing all of us in hatred and violence.)
