Every morning , when the Jew recites the prayet 'Fortunate are we, how good is our lot !' his mouth and heart are in sync. What us the nature of this joy ? I believe it emanates from the fact that we do not subsist in a hollow, vacuous universe. We do not feel that we are wandering though chaos, that we are building on nothingness, that our lives are just an accidental shrub, and that our culture is the aftergrowth of much ado about nothing. The feeling  - which exists among the other nations - that time is a great abyss does not oppress us. The life of Israel is stretched between two historical poles: The Exodus from Egypt and the messianic kingdom.
