"Six days shall thou labor and do all thy work (Exodus 20:8). Is it possible for a human being to do all his work in six days ? Does not our work always remain incomplete ? What the verse means to convey is : Rest on the Sabbath as if all your work were done. Another interpretation: Rest even from the thought of labor."

Man encounters himself, he is surprised to know himself, in the words he utters, in the deeds he does, and above all in living as an answer.

What follows is an attempt to describe some modes of being human which every reader as a human being will recognize and accept as essential. They represent a requiredness rather than a fabrication of the mind; not postulates of morality  but fundamentals of human existence. Failure in nurturing the essential sensibilities results in the decay of the humanity of the individual man.

A. J. Heschel, Who is Man ? Stanford U Press, p 31. Following is  a list of  the sensibilities Heschel describes in chapter three of W.I.M ?

Preciousness
Uniqueness
Opportunity
Nonfinality
Process and events
היחיד והכלל (?)*   Solitude and solidarity
Reciprocity
Sanctity

The exclamation of the Psalmist. " I am fearfully and wonderfully made !" (139:14) expresses man's sense of wonder at the mystery of his own existence. There is a depth of personal existence that cannot be fully illumined, that eludes our generalizations. Yet the necessity to understand man is rough and demanding.

The degree to which one is sensitive to other people's suffering, to other men's humanity. is the index of one's own humanity.

There is no dignity without the ability to stand alone. One must withdraw and be still in order to hear....
The truth, however, is that man is never alone. It is together with all my contemporaries that I live, suffer, and rejoice, even while living in seclusion....Man alone is a conceit. He is for the sake of, by the strength of, unknowingly and even knowingly involved in the community of man.

A J Heschel, Who is Man ? Stanford U Press, pp 44-45
