The music of refined actions, the melody of a noble soul, is woven into the tapestry of eternal music which God himself composed.

The pious man is alive to what is solemn in the simple, to what is sublime in the sensuous, but he is not aiming to penetrate into the sacred. Rather, he is striving to be himself, penetrated and actuated by the sacred, eager to yield to its force, to identify himself with every trend in the world which is toward the divine....Piety is the realization and verification of the transcendent in human life.

Whenever the rabbi of Sasov saw anyone's suffering either of spirit or of body, he shared it so earnestly that the other's suffering became his own. Once someone expressed his astonishment at this capacity to share in  another's troubles.
"What  do you mean 'share?' said the rabbi. "It is my own sorrow; how can I help but suffer it ?"

It is written: "And ye shall be holy unto Me."
The Rabbi of Kotzk explained: "Ye shall be holy unto me, but as men, ye shall be humanly holy unto me."

Rabbi Mendel of Kotzk once said to his congregation :

"What do I ask of you ? Only three things : Not to look furtively outside yourselves, not to look furtively into others, and not to have yourselves in mind."

Rabbi Bunam taught :

"Our sages say: 'Seek peace in your own place.' You cannot find peace anywhere save in your own self. In the psalm we read: ' There is no peace in my bones because of my sin.' When a man has made peace within himself, he will be able to make peace in the whole world."

Rabbi Bunam  once said :

"How I envy the butcher who weighs out meat for the sabbath all day Friday, and before evening goes from house to house to collect his money. And then he hears the call that the sabbath is being welcomed in the House of Prayer and he runs there as fast as his legs will carry him, so that he too can welcome the sabbath, and hurries home to pronounce the blessing, and sighs and says: ' Praise be to God who has given us the sabbath as a day of rest.'
"Oh, if I could only savor the sabbath as he does !"
