שני מקורות של מחשבה דתית ניתנו בידנו : הזיכרון (המסורת) ותובנות אישיות. עלינו לבטוח בזיכרוננו, ועלינו לחתור לתובנות אישיות רעננות. אנו שומעים מפי המסורת, ובד בבד אנו מבינים באמצעות חיפושנו האישיים....

הצורך של כל אדם ואדם לבקש את האלוהים נרמז בשירת הים :

   זה אלי ואנוהו

   אלהי אבי וארוממנהו

   (שמ' טו2)

ראשית על האדם להבין מתוך דעתו הוא; ועל כך נאמר זה אלי ואנוהו. לאחר מכן יבין גם שזה אלהי אבי, ואז וארוממנהו.

Two sources of religious thinking are given us: memory (tradition) and personal insight. We must rely on our memory and we must strive for fresh insight. We hear from tradition, we also understand through our own seeking......

An allusion to the need for every man's own quest for God was seen homiletically in the Song of the Red Sea:

      This is my God, and I will glorify Him;

      The God of my father, and I willl exalt Him.

                         Exodus 15:2

Out of his own insight a person must first arrive at the understanding: This is my God, and I will glorify Him, and subsequently he will attain realization that He is the God of my father, and I shall exalt Him.
