"אינני מאמין במונופולין" השיב השל לשאלת המראיין, קרל שטרן: "היכן שרויה הקדושה? האם נמצאת בתנ"ך ? האם אך שם נמצא את הקדושה ?

והשל המשיך: חושבני כי אלוהים אוהב את כל בני האדם. עמים רבים ואנשים רבים מודעים לגדולתו ולאהבתו. את האלוהים נמצא בלבבות רבים בכל העולם. אין הוא מוגבל לעם אחד, או לאומה אחת , ואף לא לדת אחת.

אך עליך להבין , שוב, ונחזור לבעיית המיוחדות. מה הוא המיוחד שנתן לנו התנ"ך, אשר לא נמצאנו בשום מקום אחר ? הייתי אומר, כי זוהי ההכרה המיוחדת בגדולת האדם, בפוטנציאליות העצומה של האדם כשותף לאלוהים. רעיון זה , לדעתי, אינו נמצא בשום מקום אחר.

In reply to Carl Stern's questions : Where is holiness ? Is it what's in the Bible ? Is that where one finds holiness ? Heschel stated :

I don't believe in monopoly. I think God loves all men. He  has given many nations, He has given all men an awareness of His greatness and of His love. And God is to be found in many hearts all over the world. Not limited to one nation or to one people, to one religion.

But you have to understand, again. to come back to the problem of uniqueness. What has the Hebrew Bible given us in particular that is not to be found anywhere else ? I would say the particular appreciation of the greatness of man, of man's tremendous potentiality as a partner of God. This idea to me , is not to be found anywhere else.
