אירוע פירושו התרחשות שאי-אפשר לצמצם לכדי חלק מתהליך. דבר שאין ביכולתנו להסבירו עד תום ואף לא לצפותו מראש. כל שיח על אירועים מקפל בתוכו את הטענה שיש בתוך העולם התרחשויות הנשגבות מיכולת ההסבר שלנו. ואילו האמונה בהתגלות אומרת במפורש את מה שההכרה באירועים אומרת במשתמע: קולו של אלוהים נכנס אל העולם ועותר בפני האדם שיעשה רצון קונו.....

לתהליך אין עתיד. הוא עובר מן העולם, ותוצאותיו תופסות את מקומו. אין אנו מהרהרים בשלג דאשתקד. אירוע, לעומת זאת, שומר על משמעותו גם לאחר שחלף מן העולם. הוא נותר כמוטיב תמידי בשל תוצאותיו ובלי כל קשר להן. אירועים גדולים, כמו יצירות מופת באמנות, הם משמעותיים בשל עצמם. העניין שלנו בהם נמשך זמן רב לאחר שפסו מן העולם.
ואכן אחד המאפיינים המיוחדים של הקיום האנושי הוא, שהעבר לעולם אינו נעלם כליל. אירועים מסוימים מזמנים עתיקים עשויים למשוך את לבנו עד עצם היום הזה. אירועים מתים, עניינים שחלםו מן העולם, אי אפשר לחוש אותם ואי אפשר לספרם. אנו משוחררים ממה שחלף בלי שוב. לעומת זאת יש אירועים שלעולם אינם הופכים לנחלת העבר. ניתן להגדיר את ההיסטוריה הקדושה כניסיון להתגבר על הקו המחלק בין העבר להווה, כניסיון לראות את העבר כהווה.
תפיסה זו של הזמן אינה נחלתם הבלעדית של ההיסטוריונים. מחזיקים בה באין יודעין כל בני האדם, והוא צורך מהותי לחיים של תרבות.

An event is a happening that cannot be reduced to a part of a process. It is something we can neither predict nor fully explain. To speak of events is to imply that there are happenings in the world that are beyond the reach of our explanations. What the consciousness of events implies the belief in revelation claims explicitly, namely , that a voice of God enters the world which pleads with man to do His will....

A process has no future. It becomes obsolete and is always replaced by its own effects. We do not ponder about last year's snow. An event, on the other hand, retains its significance even after it has passed; it remains as a lasting motive because and regardless of its effects. Great events, just as great works of art, are significant in themselves. Our interest in them endure long after they are gone.
It is, indeed, one of the peculiar features of human existence that the past does not altogether vanish, that some events of hoary antiquity may hold us in their spell to this very day. Events which are dead, things which are gone, can neither be sensed nor told. There is a liberation from what is definitely past. On the other hand, there are events which never become past. Sacred history may be described as an attempt to overcome the dividing line of past and present, as an attempt to see the past in the present tense.
Such understanding of time is not peculiar to historians. It is shared unknowingly by all men and is essential to civilized living.
