The days of the past and the present are inextricably tied together. The love of the people of Israel is inconceivable if we don't walk with the generations that produced us, and vice versa: without love for the Jews of all time - including even the frivolous and vacuous among them - we will not succeed in connecting with the Israel of the past. The unity of all generations and the unity of all those in our generation are dependent on each other. We must walk with the prophet Isaiah, Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai, Maimonides, and the Baal Shem Tov, just as we must interact with those who live among us today.
