היהדות מלמדת אותנו , כי יופי הנקנה על חשבון הצדק תועבה הוא ומקצה מחמת מאוס.
כל הערכים אינם עולים אלא למה ששוים בעיני המקום, כי רק באורו נראה אורםץ מכמני העולם, על כל הנוי והקסם שלהם, לא שרירין ולא קיימין, כשהם גורמים למעט את דמותו של האלוהי בעולם. אשרי מי שרואה לעינים וללב גם יחד. אשרי האיש אשר לא הלך שולל אחרי הנראה כחשוב ולא סלד מעלוב המראה. זהו הסימן לאיש הרוח: בגדים מבהיקים, פנים שוחקות או פלאי אמנות, אינם קוסמים לו, כשאוון ועמל, חמס או הוות בקרבם. בנינים כלילי יופי, היכלים נהדרים, המעידים לכאורה, על פאר וכבוד, על עוז ותעצומות, לזרא הם לו, אם נבנו בזיעת עבדים או בדמעות עשוקים, אם הוקמו בעוול ותרמית. והצביעות היוצאת בהינומה של התחסדות, גרועה בעיניו מן העוול הגלוי.

Judaism teaches us that beauty which is acquired at the cost of justice is an abomination and should be rejected for its loathsomeness.

All values are  esteemed only to the extent that they are worthy in the sight of God, for only through the Divine Light is their light seen. Treasures of the world, though they be marked by beauty and charm, when  they diminish the image of the divine will not endure. Fortunate is the person who sees with eyes and heart together. Fortunate is the person who is not entranced by the grand facade or repulsed by the appearance of misery. This is the mark of the spiritual personality: chic clothes, smiling faces, and aristic wonders which are filled with evil and injustice do not entrance him. Architectual wonders and monumental temples, which seem to testify to glory and honor, power and strength, are loathsome to him if they were built with the sweat of slaves and the tears of the oppressed, if they were raised with wrongdoing and deceit. Hypocrisy which parades under the veil of righteousness is worse to him than obvious wrongdoing.
