הרוע אינו רק איום; הוא גם אתגר. לא די בהכרת הסכנה או באמונה בכוחו הגואל של אלוהים כדי לתקן את מצבו הטרגי של העולם. לא נוכל  לסכל את גאות הרוע בבקשת מקלט בבתי תפילה או בתחנונים קדחתניים לכול -יכולתו המרוסנת של אלוהים.

המצווה, המעשה היחיד והצנוע של עבודת אלוהים, של סיוע לאדם, של היטהרות האדם - היא דרכנו להתמודד עם הבעיה....

המסורת היהודית, למרות היותה ערה לסכנות ולמכשולים של קיומנו, מספקת תזכורת מתמדת להזדמנויות רבות ההוד והנצחיות לעשיית טוב. אנו לומדים לאהוב את חיי העולם הזה בשל אפשרויות הצדקה והקדושה שבהם, בשל הדרכים הרבות הפתוחות בפנינו לעבוד את הקדוש ברוך הוא. 'יפה שעה אחת בתשובה ומעשים טובים בעולם הזה מכל חיי העולם הבא'.[משנה, אבות, ד, יז] נכון אמנם ש'העולם הזה דומה לפרוזדור בפני העולם הבא',  ושעל כל אדם  להתקין עצמו בפרוזדור כדי שייכנס לטרקלין [שם, טז], אך בעיני אלוהים, גדולים הניסיון וההכנה מן ההישג והשלמות.

Evil is not only a threat, it is also a challenge. Neither the recognition of the peril nor faith in the redemptive power of God is sufficient to solve the tragic predicament of the world. We cannot  stem the tide of evil by taking refuge in temples, by fervently imploring the restrained omnipotence of God.

The mitzvah, the humble single act of serving God, of helping man. of cleansing the self, is our way of dealing with the problem.....

Jewish tradition, though conscious of the perils and pitfalls of existence, is a constant reminder of the grand and everlasting opportunities to do the good. We are taught to love life in this world because of the possibilities of charity and sanctity, because of the many ways open to us to serve the Lord. 'More precious. therefore, than all of life in the world to come is a single hour of life on earth - an hour of repentance and good deeds'.

True, this world is only ' a vestibule to the world to come,' where we must prepare ourselves before we enter 'the banquet hall'.' Yet, in the eyes of God, the endeavor and the preparation are greater than the achievement and perfection.
