איזה מן אדם הוא הנביא ? סטודנט לפילוסופיה הפונה מהשיחות של ההוגים הגדולים לנאומי הנביאים עלול לחוש כאילו נע הוא ממחוזות הנשגב לתחומם של עניינים זניחים. במקום לטפל בנושאים שברומו של עולם, בענייני חומר וצורה, הגדרות והוכחות, נזרק הוא להפצרות אודות אלמנות ויתומים,  שחיתותם של שופטים ועניינים של השוק. במקום להראות לנו דרך אל היכלי השכל המהודרים, לוקחים אותנו נביאי ישראל לשכונות עוני. העולם הינו מקום מהודר, מלא יופי, אך הנביאים מוטרפים ומשתוללים כאילו כל העולם היה סלאמס. עושים הם עניין מדברים פעוטים, מכבירים מילים על נושאים שוליים. אז מה אם בארץ ישראל העתיקה, עניים זכו ליחס לא הוגן מצד העשירים ?אז מה אם נשים זקנות מצאו אושר והארה בתפילה ל"מלכת השמיים" ? מדוע התרגשות מוגזמת כזאת ? מדוע השתוממות עזה כל כך ?

What manner of man is the prophet? A student of philosophy who turns from the discourses of the great metaphysicians to the orations of the prophets may feel as if he is going from the realm of the sublime to an area of trivialities. Instead of dealing with the timeless issues of being and becoming, of matter and form, of definitions and demonstrations, he is thrown into orations about widows and orphans, about the corruption of judges and affairs of the market place. Instead of showing us the way through the elegant mansions, the prophets takes us to the slums. The world is a proud place, full of beauty, but the prophets are scandalized, and raved as if the whole world were a slum. They make much ado about paltry things, lavishing excessive language upon trifling subjects. What if somewhere in ancient Palestine poor people have not been treated properly by the rich? So what if some old women found pleasureand edification in worshipping the “Queen of Heavens”? Why such immoderate excitement? Why such intense indignation?
