"הצדיק באדרת"

 

אין היהדות מתקיימת אלא בצבור. ראש דאגתו של היהודי הוא לא שיזכה לשבת בכבוד בגן עדן, אלא לכונן ולהבטיח את קיומו של ישראל. גדול המעשה יותר מן העושה. גדול המלמד יותר מן הלומד. הדואג רק לו ולשלימותו למה הוא דומה ? 'לצדיק באדרת' (צדיק אין פעלץ). מה משמע  'צדיק באדרת' ? אם צינה בבית ואנו רוצים לחמם את גופנו הרי הברירה בידנו לעשות אחת משתי אלה: להסיק את התנור או להתלבש באדרת. מה בין הסקת התנור ללבישת האדרת ? כשהתנור מוסק הרי חם לי וחם לזולתי, וכשאני מצטנף באדרת - חם לי לבדי (הרבי מקוצק).

Judaism exists only in community. The primary concern of the Jew is not to merit an honorable seat in the Garden of Eden but, rather, that he assure the continued existence of the people Israel. 'One who causes a deed to be performed is greater than one who performs it'. The teacher is greater than the student. What is the one who looks out only for himself and his own perfection compared to ? 'To a Zaddik in a fur coat' (Zaddik in pelz). What is a 'Zaddik in a fur coat' ? If there is a chill in the house and we wish to warm our bodies, we have two choices: to light a fire in the stove or to put on a fur coat. What is the difference between lighting a fire and putting on the fur ? When the fire is lit, I am warm and others are warm as well, when I wrap myself in fur, it is only I  who am warm ( the Kotker rebbe).
