הרבה תקופות עברו מן היום שהתחילו חוזינו ונביאנו לזעזע את המצפון האנושי בזעקת שבר, כי השחית כל בשר את דרכו על הארץ, כי מלאה הארץ חמס, כדת - כמדינה, כיחיד - כציבור. אולם, עם זה, הציתו בנו הנביאים את החזון והתשוקה לתיקון ולשיפור. אנו כופרים, בהחלט, כי סדר העולם נקבע לדורות, בבחינת חוק ולא יעבור. כל יום וכל תקופה עשויים להיות כעין ערב שבת, והוטל עלינו כיצד להכין מן החול לשבת. אין בידנו לדחוק את הקץ, אבל בידינו להוסיף מן החול על הקודש. ומכל שעה אפשר להוסיף. ההכנה נוהגת אף בדברים של מה-בכך, כי אין יכול לסיים בגדול, אם לא תפתח בקטן. השחק הנטוי על פני הים הגדול נמתח גם על האבק שעל פני המשעול העזוב. ואף על פי שהשמדת הרשע והעברת הזדון מן הארץ אין בהם משום מלאכה קלה - הרי גם נטילת ידים וברכת 'המוציא', אינם מן הדברים שרשאי אדם לדוש בעקביו ולזלזל בהם.

Many eras have passed since our visionaries and prophets began shaking the human conscience with the anguished cry that all flesh had corrupted its ways on earth, that the earth was filled with violence, in religion as in politics, with individuals as with communal affairs. However, along with this, the prophets sparked in us the vision and the desire to repair and improve the world. We clearly are heretics if we believe that human affairs are predetermined in an inviolable manner. Each day and each era have the potential to be Friday, and it is incumbent upon us to learn how to prepare on a weekday for the Sabbath. We lack the power to prematurely force the advent of the end of days, but we are able to add to the sacred from the profane. And it is possible to accomplish such additions every hour. Preparation is necessary even in commonplace matters, for you cannot reach the significant without beginning with the insignificant. The same heavens that are stretched out over the ocean also cover the dust on an abandoned path. And though the destruction of evil and the eradication of malice are not easy tasks, laving one's hands before eating bread and reciting the blessing over the bread are not to be trampled upon and made light of.
