תלמיד אחד של הרבי מקוצק סיפר בזקנותו זמן מה לפני פטירתו:

רצוני למסור לכם את המאמר הראשון ששמעתי מפי הרבי, זכותו תגן עלינו. הרבה שמעתי מפיו קודם לזה, אבל מאמר אחד זה הלהיב את לבי לעולמים. הדבר היה בליל שבת אחר הקידוש. הרב ישב על כיסאו הרם וקלסתר פניו נשתנה, כאילו פרחה נשמתו מן הגוף ורק מרחפת היא עדיין סביבו. בעוז רב פשט את ידיו, שפך על ידינו מים לנטילת ידים, בירך על הלחם ובצעו. אחרי כן אמר:

"יש בעולם חכמים, חוקרים והוגים. כולם חוקרים והוגים בסודו של הבורא. אבל מה יכולים הם לקלוט מן הסוד הזה ? לא יותר ממה שיש בכוח מדרגת התבונה להשיג. אבל עם בני ישראל קדושים, - יש להם כלי, כלי העשייה, כלומר, המצוות המעשיות, ובזה יכולים הם לתפוס יותר מכפי מדרגתם, עד למדרגת מלאכי השרת. וזהו 'נעשה ונשמע', בעשייתנו אנו שומעים".

A disciple of Rabbi Mendel of Kotzk told this story in his old age, shortly before he died:

"I shall tell you the first saying I heard from the rabbi. I heard many after that, but with this first he kindled my heart forever. It was on a sabbath eve after the Benediction of Sanctification. The rabbi sat in his big chair, and his face was transformed as though his soul had left his body and was floating about him. He stretched out his arms with a gesture of great decision, poured water over our hands, spoke the benediction over the bread, and broke the bread. Then he said :

"'In the world there are sages, students, and thinkers. They all think of and study the mystery of God. But what can they find out about it ? No more than they can grasp  from their rung of reason. But the holy children of Israel have a vessel: it is to do God's will and with this vessel they can hold more than is accorded their rung, they can grasp what is accorded on the rung of the ministering angels. That is what is meant by the words spoken at Sinai: "We do, we hear." It is with our doing that we grasp.'"
