תכליתו של המדע הוא להסביר את תהליכי הטבע. כל הסבר שמציע המדע לתופעת טבע מבוסס על ההנחה שאובייקטים בעולם מתנהגים על פי דפוס קבוע, שהוא רציונלי בבסיסו ובר הבנה לתבונה האנושית. ככל שמתקדם המדע, מתברר כי יותר ויותר תופעות ניתנות להבנה. בכך מאוששת ההנחה שהתנהגותם של דברים היא רציונלית ומודגמת התאמתם לתבונה האנושית. סביר להניח שתופעות רבות , שלעת עתה חתומות הן, יזכו בעתיד, עם התקדמות המדע, להנהרה.
עם זאת, מהותה של המציאות נותרת בלתי מתאימה לקטגוריות שלנו. הטבע, ההוויה בתור הוויה, אפילו החשיבה שלנו, כל אלה נמצאים מעבר לגבולות התפישה שלנו. מהותם של הדברים היא נפלאת מתאור, וככזו אינה תואמת את התבונה האנושית. אי התאמה זו היא המקור למחשבה היוצרת, לאמנות, לדת ולחיים המוסריים. נוכל אפוא להציע שכשם ששורשי המדע נעוצים בתגלית התאמתה של המציאות לשכל האנושי, כך התגלית של אי התאמתה של העולם לשכל האנושי היא שורשה של התובנה האמנותית והדתית. בממלכה שאין למילה דריסת רגל בה, שכל מחשבה בה נוגעת במסתורין, שם נולדות שאלות היסוד של הדת.

The object of science is to explain the processes of nature. Every scientific explanation of a natural phenomenon rests upon the assumption that things behave in a way which is fundamentally rational and intelligible to the human reason. Through the advancement of science, more and more phenomena are shown to be intelligible, thus confirming the assumption of the rationality of the way in which things behave and their compatibility with human reason. Many phenomena unapprehended today will in all probability be explained as scientific investigation continues to advance.
However, the essence of reality remains incompatible with our categories. Nature, being as being, and even the very act of thinking. lie beyond the scope of apprehension. The essence of things is ineffable and thus incompatible with the human mind, and it is precisely this incompatibility that is the source of all creative thinking in art, religion and moral living. We may, therefore, suggest that just as the discovery of reality's compatibilty with the human mind is the root of science, so the discovery of the world's incompatibility with the human mind is the root of artistic and religious insight. It is the realm of the ineffable, where the mystery is within reach of all thoughts, in which the ultimate problems of religion are born.
