סיפר רבי בונם:

כשהבעל שם טוב עשה את החסידים, חש עצמו יצר הרע בצרה גדולה, כי, כך אמר לגדודיו, "עתה יקומו החסידים של הבעל-שם-טוב ובקדושתם יציתו את העולם." אבל אחר-כך מצא לו עצה. התחפש והלך אל שני חסידים, שישבו בעיר אחת, ואמר : "מעשיכם ראויים לתהילה, אבל עליכם להיות לפחות עשרה, כדי שתוכלו להתפלל בציבור." הביא שמונה מאנשיו וצירף אותם יחד. וכיון שהיה חסר להם כסף בשביל ספר תורה ושכר בית-התפילה וכדומה, הביא אליהם איש עשיר מאנשיו והוא נתן להם כל צרכם. כך עשה יצר הרע בכל מקום. כשגמר מעשהו אמר לאנשיו: "עתה אין אנו צריכים עוד לפחד מהם, כי יש לנו הרוב, ואחרי רבים להטות."

Rabbi Bunam told this story:

"When the Baal Shem Tov made the first hasidim, the Evil Urge was in great straits, for, as, he said to his followers, 'now the hasidim of the Baal Shem Tov will set the world ablaze with their holiness.' But then he thought of a way out.

"He disguised himslef, pretended to be someone else, and went to two hasidim who lived in a certain town. 'Your work is praisworthy', he said to them. 'But there ought to be at least ten of you, so that you can pray in a quorum.' He fetched eight of his people and joined them to those two hasidim. And since they had no money to purchase a scroll and other things they needed, he brought them a rich man - also one of his adherents- who provided them with whatever was necessary. He did the same everywhere. When he had finished he said to his hosts: 'Now we no longer need to be afraid of  anything, for we have the majority, and that is what counts.' "
